BAKER 2nd AT USA NATIONAL 5K

Brian Baker (Dorchester MA / New Balance) ended his 1998 road racing season with a 2nd place finish at the USATF National 5K held on New Year's Eve - December 31 - at the Gator Bowl Rockin' the River Festival 5K in Jacksonville Florida.

Coming down to a finishing kick, Baker was edged by Dan Browne (US Army) 13:05 to 13:06. The New England athlete earned $1000 for his efforts. Browne's victory was his fifth US championship win of 1998, in events which ranged from the indoor 3000, outdoor 10,000, 4000m cross country, and 8K road.

All runners in the event ran short - approximately 3 miles - due to a marshalling error on the course. His wife Laura won the accompanying women's 5K (the USA women's 5K championship was held at the Freihofer's Run for Women in June).
