jesse owens I received my ballot for the prestigiousness Jesse Owens award and was delighted to see Joanne Dow, of Bedford, New Hamphsire, as a finalist for 1998. The Jesse Owens Award is presented annually by the USA Track & Field to the nation's outstanding male and female Athletic Performers. The MVP award goes back to 1981 and includes Edwin Moses, Carl Lewis, Mary Decker, Joan Benoit, Willie Banks, Jackie Joyner-Kerssee, Florence Griffith Joyner, Roger Kingdom, Lynn Jennings, Kevin Young, Gail Devers, Michael Johnson, Marion Jones, and Allen Johnson.

The finalists for the 1998 Jesse Owens Award, to be voted on by members of this year's Selection Committee, are: Men: - Charles Austin, Bryan Bronson, John Godina, Maurice Grenne, Bob Kennedy and Jerome Young; Women: - Joanne Dow, Regina Jacobs, Marion Jones, Jearl Miles-Clark, Connie Price-Smith and Tisha Waller.

Here's a brief bio on Joanne Dow:

Dow had a season of firsts, including her 10-kilometer race walk win at the U.S. nationals in New Orleans. She paced the American women to their first-ever Pan American Race Walk Cup team win with an individual gold over 2nd in Miami -- also a first for a U.S. woman.
