1999 Mountain Running in New England
by Dave Dunham ( mtnman@greennet.net )

This is an attempt to list the mountain races that I know of in New England. It is in no way a comprehensive list of all races. For more information try some of the links I've listed. It is always a good idea to contact the race before driving to the start line, please verify information first! Notes are my personal opinions and as such highly suspect! If you have any additions or correction please let me know. Stay healthy and have fun out there!

brake@iamnow.net
Notes: Starts in Warner, one tough climb early, rolling hills to 5 miles. Last 3.5 very tough, a couple of flatish sections to recover. Prizes, post run massage, all miles marked. Course difficulty = pretty tough, the last 3.5 are a grind. Footing = excellent, all paved roads.
Soapstone Mtn - 13.75m +-2000' Somers CT Contact - Jerry Stage

Notes: Starts with a quick up and over of Soapstone. Challenging trail race with roots, rocks, and streambeds. Team and individual awards. Course difficulty = fairly tough, lots of rolling hills. Keep your eyes open for trail markers! Footing = tough, a fair amount of poor to very poor footing, mud, roots.
May 29 Wachusett Mtn - 4.3m +1900' -800' Princeton MA Contact - Don Drewniak
POB 2 Greendale Sta
Worcester MA 01606
rrne@ultranet.com
Notes: Very tough first mile, then rolling up/down to the summit. Very well run by CMS, low entry fee, Awards on the summit (one of a kind sweatshirts). Great views from the summit. A mountain sprint event. Course difficulty = pretty easy once you get through the first mile, although the short length of the course may cause folks to go faster than they should early on. Footing = very good, paved road to the summit.
June 6 Pack Monadnock - 10m +2020' Wilton NH Contact - Dave Beauley
55 Bartemus trail
Nashua NH 03063
603-598-0727
david.h.beauley@lmco.com
Notes: A moderately difficult 7 miles followed by a mountainous finish. The last 1.5 on Pack (some sections steeper than Mt Washington) may make you rethink why you enjoy mountain running. Course difficulty = tough, the combination of fast early miles, and a nasty finish make this very challenging. Footing = very good, paved road most of the way (a couple of sections of dirt road).

Notes: The highest peak in the Northeast. Lottery for entry held in March. Limited to 1000 runners. Climbs at an average of 11.5% grade. Weather is always a factor in this race. Try the run down after for spectacular scenery. This race is the king of mountain races in New England. Course difficulty = very, very tough, no breaks, no relief, one long grind. Course footing = Auto road, some paved, some dirt, can be muddy if rainy.

Notes: Nice race, prizes, big raffle, free lift ride on race day. Awards on the summit, great views of Mt Washington. The course is run on dirt roads and a little grass. Course difficulty = not too bad, some tough climbs mixed with some flatter areas. The first 1/2 mile completely flat, then a long tough climb followed by a mixture of climbs and breaks to the summit. Course footing = dirt roads, a little pavement, a little trail. Generaly very good footing.

Course difficulty = very tough, runs slower than a marathon, many moderate climb/descents that add up to a tough course. Some stretches of fast running that'll keep you honest. Course footing = narrow trail, some rocky escarpments, tough.
